A Day Well-Spent in Savannah: Squares, Stories & Southern Charm 🌳🌿

There’s something enchanting about Savannah—a city draped in Spanish moss ( not Spanish nor moss btw) and steeped in history. We spent a day exploring this Southern gem, and I left completely smitten. From wandering through sun-dappled squares to enjoying a memorable dinner and becoming enamored with ancient trees, Savannah’s charm worked its magic from start to finish.

Walking Through Living History

We began our day with a walk through Savannah’s iconic squares. Dan and Jill have been here before and Dan worked as our tour guide. Each square has its own personality—some quiet and shaded, others lively with fountains, monuments, and musicians. Chippewa Square (yes, that “Forrest Gump” bench square) and Lafayette Square were personal favorites, each brimming with character and framed by towering oak trees.

And oh, the trees. Giant live oaks draped in Spanish moss arched over cobbled paths like nature’s cathedral. It’s hard to overstate how much these trees add to the feeling of stepping back in time. They’re not just beautiful—they’re a presence, a part of the city’s soul.

Touring in Style

To soak up more history (and give our legs a break), we hopped aboard a historic trolley tour. It was the perfect way to get a sense of Savannah’s past while catching glimpses of hidden gardens, stately mansions, and someentertaining stories from the guides. From haunted tales to Revolutionary War heroes, Savannah’s layers of history unfolded with each stop. Dan proved to be an excellent tour guide, as we heard many of the same tales on the trolley that he shared with us earlier. I highly recommend the tour, unless you have Uncle Dan with you 😉

Southern Flavors at Husk

As the dinner hour crept in, we made our way to Husk, nestled in a restored mansion that matched the elegance of everything we’d seen. The food? Phenomenal. Husk takes Southern cuisine and elevates it without losing its soul. We savored every bite—from collared green to melt-in-your-mouth duck. The cocktails were inventive, the atmosphere warm and refined, and the service as gracious as you’d expect in the heart of the South.

Final Thoughts

Savannah is one of those rare cities that feels like a gentle embrace. Even in a single day, we experienced a rhythm and richness that left us wanting more. It’s in the rustle of mossy branches, the stories tucked into every square, and the way time seems to slow just enough to let you breathe it all in.

If you’re ever in the mood for a little history, a lot of beauty, and some of the best trees you’ll ever see, Savannah is waiting.
